Barrio de la Estación

Barrio de la Estación

Barrio de la Estación is a neighborhood in Haro built around the train station with numerous wineries concentrated in its streets. The buildings are constructed of stone and brick with large wooden doors, and many have been updated over time while preserving original architectural elements.

The neighborhood developed in the second half of the 19th century when French wine producers arrived and built wineries near the newly constructed railroad. The railway enabled the export of wine to other regions and abroad, making this area the center of wine commerce.

The neighborhood functions as a working wine production hub where families maintain their craft across generations. Visitors can observe the daily activity through open winery doors and learn about how wine is made, aged, and distributed from here.

The neighborhood is easy to reach with parking and bus stops nearby and can be explored on foot, with many wineries offering tours and tastings. The best times to visit are during daytime hours when the wineries are active, and the streets can be narrow and steep, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

The area is sometimes called the golden mile of Rioja wine because it holds the world's largest concentration of very old wineries organized around a central point. This unusual arrangement around the railroad makes it a rare example of how transportation networks shaped wine production.
