Funicular de Artxanda
The Funicular de Artxanda is a funicular railway in the Uribarri neighborhood of Bilbao that links the city center to the top of Mount Artxanda. The route runs about 770 meters and climbs more than 220 meters of elevation, with a ride lasting roughly three minutes.
The funicular opened in 1915 to carry visitors to a casino on the hilltop. It was damaged during the Spanish Civil War, then repaired and modernized in 1983.
The name Artxanda comes from Basque and refers to the hill where the upper station sits. At the top, visitors find open views over the rooftops of Bilbao, while locals use the area around the upper station for walks and outdoor time.
The lower station is at Plaza del Funicular in Uribarri, about a ten-minute walk from Bilbao's city hall. Clear days offer the best views from the top, so it is worth checking the weather before heading up.
The funicular was originally built by a Swiss company that specialized in mountain railways. After the casino at the top closed, the line gradually shifted from a tourist attraction into an everyday transport option used by Bilbao residents.
