Big Wave point

Big Wave point

Point de la grande vague is a scenic viewpoint in Nazaré, Portugal, offering a clear view of one of the world's most famous big wave locations. An underwater canyon close to the shore concentrates ocean energy, causing waves to grow exceptionally large and powerful as they approach the coast.

Nazaré was a fishing village for centuries with traditions that persist today, but gained worldwide fame in the 2000s when daring surfers began riding its massive waves. Big wave competitions started in 2011, transforming the location into a premier destination for extreme water sports.

The name 'Point de la grande vague' reflects the international attention this place receives as a world-famous big wave location. Visitors gather on the cliffs together to witness the ocean's power, creating a shared experience where locals and travelers connect through their respect for the sea's raw force.

Park in the upper part of town early, especially on busy wave days, then walk down to the cliffs or closer to the beach. Wear warm clothing and bring good shoes since viewing points are on elevated terrain, and the wave impact often creates mist and spray.

Waves here regularly reach heights over 80 feet (25 meters) from November through February, making Nazaré the site of multiple world records. Sebastian Steudtner set the current record in 2020 riding a wave approximately 86 feet (26 meters) high, demonstrating the rare and extreme power generated at this location.
