Ormiston Gorge
Ormiston Gorge is a deep valley with steep red cliff walls rising about 300 meters and creating a narrow passage through the landscape. At its base sits a waterhole that remains full year-round, surrounded by sandy shores where visitors can swim and rest.
This region was lush and green millions of years ago, covered in rainforest and tropical plants before changing into the dry landscape seen today. Ghost gums and cycads have survived this transformation and reveal traces of this ancient past.
The gorge is called Kwartatuma by the Western Arrernte people who have deep connections to this land. The waterhole holds spiritual significance as a source of life and tradition within their cultural stories.
The area is easily reached by sealed roads from Alice Springs, about 135 kilometers away, and a Park Pass is required for entry. The best time to visit is April through September when weather is mild and comfortable for walking and swimming.
The waterhole stays full year-round and remains refreshingly cold even on hot days because of the shade from the tall cliff walls. This consistent coolness makes it a welcome oasis in the dry desert landscape.
