Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park

Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park is a nature reserve that extends along ancient mountain ranges roughly 161 kilometers west of Alice Springs through red desert landscapes. The terrain features numerous walking trails along canyons, waterholes, and colored rock formations typical of central Australian outback topography.

The area received official protected status in 1992, marking a key moment in safeguarding Northern Territory landscapes. This designation reflected growing recognition of the region's environmental and ecological value for future generations.

The Arrernte people, the traditional inhabitants of this country, gather mineral pigments from the Ochre Pits for their artistic practices. These sites hold deep meaning in their relationship with the land and show how the community honors its natural resources.

Visitors should bring plenty of water since drinking sources are limited throughout the park's extensive trail network. It is wise to start early in the morning to take advantage of cooler conditions and better light for exploring.

The park contains permanent waterholes such as Ellery Creek Big Hole and Ormiston Gorge, which offer natural swimming areas in the desert. These unexpected oases allow visitors to cool off in clear, cold water while surrounded by steep cliff faces.
