Satkosia Gorge WLS
Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected nature reserve near Purunakot featuring dense forests and diverse animal populations. The Mahanadi River carves through narrow gorges flanked by steep slopes, with vegetation ranging from sal and teak to tropical species spread across hills and valleys.
The sanctuary was established in 1976 and became a tiger reserve in 2001. The name Satkosia derives from the local language and refers to the seven-kilometer gorge carved by the Mahanadi River over centuries.
The gorge holds deep meaning for local communities who have lived here for many generations. The river and forests form part of their daily lives and spiritual traditions, with the name Satkosia derived from the language of local tribes.
The sanctuary is open from early morning until evening and requires an entry permit with varying fees based on visitor type. Guided walks, boat rides, and overnight camping are available, with the most comfortable visiting period from November to February when wildlife is more active.
A specialized Gharial Research Center here has successfully bred and released rare crocodiles back into the river, making it an active conservation site. Visitors can observe these unusual crocodiles basking on sandbanks and witness firsthand how protection efforts help rare species survive.
