Maa Vindhyavasini Temple
Maa Vindhyavasini Temple is a Hindu temple in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, dedicated to the goddess Vindhyavasini and set on the lower slopes of the Vindhya hills near the Ganges. The main sanctuary holds the image of the goddess, which is dressed daily with flowers and ornaments by the temple priests.
The temple is linked to ancient legends in which the goddess Vindhyavasini defeated evil forces in the region, establishing her role as a guardian of the land. Over the centuries it grew into one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in northern India.
The goddess Vindhyavasini is seen as a protector of the surrounding region, and visitors can watch daily rituals of flower offerings, lamp lighting, and devotional chanting. These practices draw pilgrims from across the country who come to seek blessings and fulfil vows.
The temple sits on the edge of Mirzapur and is easy to reach by road, making it a straightforward stop from Varanasi as well. Modest clothing is required, and shoes must be removed before entering the inner prayer area.
The temple forms part of a triangle of sacred sites in the area, known locally as a Shakti Pitha cluster, and pilgrims often visit all three in a single day. Completing this circuit on foot is considered especially meritorious and remains a living tradition among devoted visitors.
