The Mariposario de Benalmádena is a butterfly house in Benalmádena, on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. Inside, a large greenhouse filled with tropical plants, orchids, small ponds, and waterfalls creates a warm, humid space where hundreds of free-flying butterflies share the air with visitors.
The butterfly house was founded with the goal of showing visitors the diversity and life cycle of tropical butterflies in a setting that goes beyond a simple enclosure. From the start, its Thai temple design was part of an intention to create a space where nature and a sense of distant cultures could be experienced together.
The building looks like a Thai temple from the outside, with pointed roofs and golden dragon statues that stand out against the Andalusian sky. Buddhist monks from the nearby Benalmádena stupa took part in its blessing, giving the place a connection to a living spiritual tradition.
The greenhouse inside is kept warm and humid, so light clothing is the right choice for a visit. Paths are accessible for strollers and wheelchairs, and most visitors spend between 45 minutes and an hour exploring at a relaxed pace.
Chrysalises are on display in an open area, and new butterflies emerge almost every day, sometimes while visitors are watching. Some of the species kept here feed not only on nectar but also on fruit, sweat, or even tears, searching for the minerals and salts they need to survive.
