Arcachon Marina, Harbor in Arcachon, France
Port d'Arcachon is a harbor in the center of Arcachon, in southwestern France, sitting on the edge of the Arcachon Basin and sheltered from open-sea conditions by its calm waters. It has a deep-water section where boats can stay year-round regardless of tides, along with a dry dock area for motorboats.
The port developed first as a safe harbor for local fishermen and sailors, then grew over time into a hub for leisure boats as well. In 2007, it was among the first ports in Europe to receive certifications in quality, safety, and environment at the same time.
The port is the only active fishing harbor in the Gironde department, and it plays a direct role in supplying fresh seafood to the local area. Buying fish directly from the docks is a habit that many residents keep, keeping maritime life present in everyday routines.
The harbor sits in the center of Arcachon, making it easy to reach on foot from most accommodations and shops. Coming in the early morning or late afternoon gives the best chance of seeing fishing boats coming and going.
Artificial habitats for seahorses have been installed beneath some of the docks to support marine life directly inside the harbor. Some moorings have also been replaced with options that avoid damaging the seagrass on the seafloor.
