Daeheungsa-gil, Temple road in Haenam-gun, South Korea

Daeheungsa-gil is a road in Haenam-gun, South Korea, that runs through dense pine forest to reach the Buddhist temple of Daeheungsa. A few small shops and tea houses line the lower stretch before the path narrows and continues up into the wooded hillside.

Daeheungsa temple is said to have been founded in 514, during the era of the Baekje kingdom, one of the early kingdoms on the Korean peninsula. It remained an active religious site across many centuries of change, which makes it one of the older continually used temple complexes in the country.

Daeheungsa-gil leads through old forest before reaching the temple gates, and the walk itself is considered part of the visit. Monks, hikers, and visitors share the same narrow path, and the shared silence along it shapes the whole experience.

The route along Daeheungsa-gil is walked on foot, and sturdy shoes are a good idea since the path climbs steadily through forested terrain. The surroundings change noticeably with the seasons, so spring and autumn tend to offer the most rewarding conditions for the walk.

Daeheungsa is also known as the place where a celebrated Korean monk lived and taught in the 16th century, and some of his writings are still kept within the complex. This connection draws people with an interest in the history of Korean Buddhism, beyond those who come simply to walk the trail.
