Wando Bridge, Road bridge in Wando County, South Korea
Wando Bridge spans the water between Wando County and Haenam County with multiple vehicle lanes for traffic flow. The structure allows vehicles to cross quickly between the two regions.
The bridge was completed in 2012 and marked a milestone in regional infrastructure development. The project connected two counties that previously required longer travel routes.
The Hanja name 莞島大橋 is the Sino-Korean form of the name, not Japanese; in Korean the bridge is called 완도대교. The current 2012 bridge was designed with a single pylon and two cable planes, its shape evoking the trade ships and helmet of Jang Bogo, the Unified Silla-era maritime figure associated with Wando.
The bridge is accessible to vehicles at all times and provides direct access between communities. Drivers should use caution during poor weather or strong winds, as bridges amplify such conditions.
The first Wando Bridge, opened in 1969, was built with truss sections dismantled from the Hangang Railway Bridge during its 1962–1968 restoration, giving it a structure similar to that bridge, about 189 m long. Its roadway was only 4.5 m wide, enough for a single car to pass.
