Naganeupseong

Naganeupseong is a fortified village settlement built on flat ground with stone walls, watchtowers, defensive moats, and four gateway entrances. The layout demonstrates the defensive planning typical of medieval Korean settlements.

This settlement was founded in 1397 to protect the coastal region following victories against pirates. It remained an important defensive position over centuries and retained its original layout.

The village is shaped by residents who maintain traditional ways of life and practice farming within its walls. Local music performances and daily routines give insight into how ordinary people lived during the Joseon era.

It is best visited during warmer months when traditional activities are most active. The location is somewhat outside the city center, so sturdy footwear is important for exploring the stone pathways and walls.

Unlike most other Korean heritage villages that housed nobility, this settlement shows everyday life as ordinary people lived it. It is one of the few places where you can see how farmers and craftspeople actually lived during that era.
