Freedj, Bar and pub in the Marais, Paris, France
Freedj is a bar and pub in the Marais neighborhood of the 4th arrondissement of Paris, open to LGBT visitors and anyone else who walks in. The venue has two levels: an upper bar area with seating, and a basement with a dance floor where DJs play most nights.
The bar grew out of the LGBT scene in the Marais, a neighborhood that became a center of queer life in Paris from the 1980s onward. Over the years, Freedj built a reputation as a regular meeting point in the area, known for its evening events.
Every Sunday night, the bar runs a night called La Messe, where DJs dressed as nuns play dance music for a crowd that comes back week after week. It is a tongue-in-cheek event that has become a regular gathering point for people who enjoy a night without pretension.
The entrance is on a narrow street in the Marais, and the area around it tends to get busy on weekend evenings. Arriving earlier in the evening gives more room to move around, as the basement fills up quickly once the night gets going.
At La Messe, guests are handed candies shaped like communion wafers and glow-in-the-dark rosaries are part of the decor, adding a playful touch to the evening. The whole concept is built around poking gentle fun at religious ritual rather than taking anything too seriously.
