Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, International airport in Tangerang, Indonesia
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is the main international airport serving Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, located in the city of Tangerang, roughly 20 miles (32 km) northwest of the city center. It has three terminals: the older terminals 1 and 2, painted in orange and brown, and the newer terminal 3, which opened in 2016 with a modern design featuring glass and green accents.
The airport was built in the late 1970s and opened in 1985 to ease the growing pressure on Jakarta's older airports. Since then, it has been expanded several times, most notably with the addition of terminal 3, built to absorb increasing international traffic.
The airport's name honors Indonesia's first president, Soekarno, and his vice president, Mohammad Hatta. The older terminals, 1 and 2, are designed to resemble traditional Javanese Joglo houses, with open lounge areas and small gardens giving them a distinctive local character.
A free shuttle train called the Skytrain runs in a loop connecting all three terminals and the airport railway station, making it easy to move between them. For travel into Jakarta, official taxi counters and pre-arranged transfers are a safer option than accepting offers from unlicensed drivers outside the arrivals area.
Although the airport is located in Tangerang, it is officially considered Jakarta's airport because it serves the capital. The land it was built on was originally used for farming, mostly rice fields, before being cleared for construction.
