Benteng Heritage Museum, Chinese heritage museum in Pasar Lama district, Indonesia.
Benteng Heritage Museum is a museum housed in a traditional Peranakan building in the Pasar Lama district of Tangerang, documenting the history of the local Chinese-Indonesian community. The collection covers clothing, trade goods, kitchen tools, and religious objects that show how Chinese settlers lived in this area.
The building dates to 1684 and sits near the Cisadane River, making it one of the oldest surviving structures in Tangerang. In 2011, Udaya Halim converted it into a museum dedicated to the Peranakan community of the area.
The name 'Benteng' means 'fortress' in Indonesian and refers to the old fortification near the river around which the local Chinese community grew. The objects on display show how Chinese and Javanese daily habits gradually mixed, visible in things like cooking tools and ceremonial items.
The museum is in the Pasar Lama district, close to the Boen Tek Bio temple, so both places can easily be visited on the same walk. Educational programs and workshops are also offered, and booking ahead is recommended if you want to join one.
During the restoration, decorative elements in the Peranakan style were added based on academic research because the original building records no longer existed. The result is a structure that mixes physical evidence with scholarly reconstruction rather than a straightforward restoration.
