Penjaringan, Coastal district in North Jakarta, Indonesia
Penjaringan is the westernmost district of North Jakarta situated along Jakarta Bay and characterized by flat coastal terrain. The area is crossed by a network of channels and water basins designed to manage water during heavy rains.
The settlement began in the 16th century as a significant port serving regional kingdoms and trade networks. It later developed under Dutch control into a major shipping and trading center.
The Maritime Museum in former Dutch warehouses tells the story of Indonesia's seafaring past through ship models and trade goods. Visitors walk through rooms where the history of port life and merchant activities becomes visible through everyday objects.
The district is flat and easy to walk through, with clear pathways along canals and between neighborhoods. During the rainy season conditions become wet and slippery, so sturdy footwear and careful movement are recommended.
The Muara Angke Sanctuary preserves a mangrove forest with more than 100 bird species and native plants. This natural forest represents one of Jakarta's last remaining patches of original coastal landscape.
