Hoenderpasar Bridge, bridge in Indonesia
Hoenderpasar Bridge spans the Kali Besar river using a distinctive double-beam lifting mechanism that raises to allow vessels to pass underneath. The original mechanical system remains functional, enabling both water traffic to flow beneath the structure and pedestrians and vehicles to cross above.
The bridge was built in 1628 by the Dutch East India Company under its original name Engelse Brug. It later became known as Hoenderpasarbrug and underwent various name changes that marked its evolving role in the city.
The bridge links different neighborhoods and preserves Dutch architectural traditions visible in its design elements. It serves as a registered heritage monument that reflects the building styles of its period.
Visitors can walk across the bridge or drive over it, and the working lifting mechanism can often be observed in action when boat traffic passes through. Early morning or evening visits offer better views since traffic is lighter and visibility of the structure and river is clearer.
During the reign of Queen Juliana, the bridge received repairs and was temporarily renamed in her honor before being called Jembatan Kota Intan. This episode reflects how colonial connections influenced the naming of local structures across different historical periods.
