West Jakarta

West Jakarta is an administrative division in Jakarta, Indonesia, that comprises eight districts with residential zones and commercial buildings. The territory extends on both sides of the Pesanggrahan River and includes the Chinatown quarter of Glodok.

The region was part of Batavia, the Dutch trading settlement, in the 17th century. In 2000 it was established as a separate administrative city and delineated from the other parts of the capital.

The Glodok quarter contains several temples and traditional markets that offer insights into the life of the Chinese-Indonesian community. Shops there sell fabrics, spices, and electronics in narrow lanes that sit side by side.

The area is connected to other parts of the city through Trans Jakarta bus lines and commuter trains. Planned metro extensions will further improve access in the coming years.

The Mall Taman Anggrek contains an indoor ice skating rink that is rare to find in the hot capital. The shopping center extends across seven connected buildings and houses more than 500 shops.
