Selamat Datang Monument, Bronze monument in Central Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Selamat Datang Monument stands at the center of the Hotel Indonesia roundabout in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta. A female and a male bronze figure, each about seven meters tall, rise from a pedestal and form a total height of roughly 30 meters together.
President Sukarno commissioned the monument in 1961 to prepare Jakarta for the fourth Asian Games of 1962. The structure was among several projects meant to give the capital a modern face.
The two figures embody traditional Indonesian hospitality with outstretched arms and a bouquet as a welcoming gesture. Visitors recognize in the monument a sign of openness that still represents the city's attitude toward guests from around the world today.
Photographers use the pedestrian bridge near the roundabout to gain clear sight lines of the bronze sculpture. The roundabout sits in the middle of a busy road, so crossing via the bridge is the safest approach to the monument.
The monument carries the name Selamat Datang, which means Welcome in Indonesian and directly expresses its function in the title. Both figures face toward the city center and symbolically greet everyone arriving in the capital.
