Muara Angke Wildlife Preserve

Muara Angke Wildlife Preserve is a mangrove forest on Jakarta's coast where saltwater crocodiles, monkeys, snakes, and numerous birds inhabit the interconnected waterways. The tangled root systems and shallow canals create a dense, layered environment typical of tropical coastal wetlands.

The site was established in 1939 as a protected area during Dutch colonial times and reflected early conservation efforts in the region. Over decades it evolved through various changes until becoming the focused mangrove preserve it is today.

The preserve functions as a learning space where visitors discover how mangrove forests support coastal communities and wildlife through hands-on guided experiences.

The preserve sits at the end of Muara Karang Raya street in a protected coastal area with restricted public access. Visits require advance booking and a guide who knows the waterways safely and can point out wildlife along the routes.

The preserve shelters more than 90 bird species, including rare visitors like the Javan plover that appear only in a handful of coastal spots. This diversity makes it a vital resting point for migratory birds traveling long distances.
