Kalijodo, Urban park in North Jakarta, Indonesia
Kalijodo is an urban park in North Jakarta with separate sections for different uses: family playgrounds, an indoor football facility, and a large skate park with multiple ramps and features. The space also includes an amphitheater for events and gathering areas where locals meet throughout the week.
The site underwent a complete transformation when hundreds of buildings were removed and the previous use was ended. From this radical change, the park was created and opened in 2017.
The name combines Indonesian words for river and soulmate, pointing to historical matchmaking customs that once flourished along this waterway. This connection to local traditions shapes how people experience the place today.
The park is open for public use and is easily reached on foot from the surrounding neighborhood. Different sections attract different crowds at various times of day, so timing your visit depends on what you want to do.
Local artists have left painted murals throughout the park, particularly around the amphitheater with bold, often social or political messages. A central monument stands as a reminder of what the location used to be before its transformation.
