Al-Azhar Great Mosque

Al-Azhar Great Mosque is an Islamic sanctuary in South Jakarta with minarets and domes rising across two levels. Its main prayer hall occupies the upper level and forms the center of this sprawling religious complex.

The mosque was founded in 1958 from the vision of 14 Masyumi Party leaders who wanted to establish an Islamic center in Kebayoran Baru. This founding represented a key moment in creating organized religious institutions within the growing capital city.

The mosque displays calligraphy throughout its central dome, showing Allah's name alongside the 99 Names of Allah in Arabic script. This decorative approach connects spiritual meaning with the visual experience of those who pray inside.

The complex spreads across multiple floors with space for prayer and education facilities throughout. Visitors should expect different elevations and allow time to explore the various sections of the grounds.

The structure received national heritage status in 1993 and was recognized as one of 18 historical sites documenting Jakarta's urban development. This designation highlights its place among the city's most important religious buildings.
