The Three Chocolates, Chocolate shop in Paris, France
Les Trois Chocolats is a small chocolate shop in Paris with a narrow storefront and a window display styled around a tea setting. Inside, a long glass case runs the length of the shop and holds handmade chocolates, pralines, and individual pastry pieces including entremets and mochi.
The family behind the shop traces its roots to Emiko Sano's grandfather, born in 1902 in Tokyo, who worked as an apprentice in a hotel and tasted his first chocolate truffle from a Russian cook. After a trip to Europe, he opened his own shop in Hakata, Japan, in 1942, and the family eventually brought the tradition to Paris.
The shop combines French and Japanese confectionery in a way that is visible from the moment you look at the display case. The square chocolates are decorated with patterns inspired by Furoshiki, the Japanese art of wrapping gifts in fabric, and ingredients like matcha, yuzu, and roasted soy flour (kinako) sit alongside classic ganaches.
The shop is small, so it is worth visiting outside of peak hours if you want time to look around and ask questions without feeling rushed. The staff are known for being helpful and willing to explain the different flavors on offer.
The name Les Trois Chocolats honors three generations of the same family who passed down the craft, rather than referring to three types of chocolate. The family's original shop in Japan is still open today.
