Pain d'Epices Fortwenger, Confectionery store in Gertwiller, Alsace, France
Pain d'Epices Fortwenger is a confectionery store in Gertwiller, a small village in Alsace known as the gingerbread capital. Also called Le Palais du Pain d'Epices, the shop combines a retail space selling gingerbread, biscuits, spices, and drinks with a guided tour area where visitors follow the making process through display windows and information panels.
The Fortwenger family workshop was founded in 1768 by Charles Fortwenger and has been producing gingerbread without interruption since then. The recipes have been handed down through the generations, with handmade production methods kept alive to this day.
Gingerbread baking is deeply tied to the festive traditions of Alsace, especially around Christmas and Saint Nicholas Day. At the Fortwenger shop, visitors can take part in decorating workshops where they ice and garnish their own gingerbread to take home.
The shop is open year-round except on December 25, January 1, and for a period in January. Parking is available in front of the building for both cars and coaches, and staff can assist visitors in French, German, and English.
The visit route includes a section called the magic garden, with a sugar fountain, gingerbread flowers, and a honey river designed to create a playful setting for children. Production takes place across two workshops, one in Gertwiller and another in Ensisheim, both of which favor locally sourced ingredients.
