SHADOW mural, Fresco in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France
Fresque SHADOW is a mural painted near the old port in Boulogne-sur-Mer, on the Rue Jean Jarrett. It shows a woman in traditional dress in the foreground, with the harbor and tall-masted sailing ships visible behind her.
The mural was created as part of a city project to bring art to public walls, which grew in Boulogne-sur-Mer from the 2010s onward. A street art festival launched in 2016 invited artists from around the world to paint across the city.
The woman in the painting wears a traditional coiffe from Boulogne-sur-Mer, a type of hat once worn by fishermen's wives. This detail connects the image to the everyday life of the port and the women who were part of it.
The mural sits on the Rue Jean Jarrett near the old port and is easy to see from the street. Walking is the best way to reach it, as several other murals are scattered through the nearby streets.
The ships shown in the background are Argentine training vessels, a reference to the ties between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Argentina. General San Martin, the national hero of Argentina, spent his final years in this town and died here.
