The Cemitério da Lapa is the oldest Romantic-style cemetery in Portugal, located in the Cedofeita neighborhood in central Porto. The grounds are lined with funerary chapels, sculptures and stone monuments built mainly during the 19th century.
The cemetery was established in the 19th century by the Irmandade da Lapa, at a time when Portugal began creating new burial grounds away from churches. In 2013, it was listed as a property of public interest, recognizing its place in the country's history.
The cemetery was founded and is still managed by the Irmandade da Lapa, a brotherhood that has cared for the grounds for generations. Many of the large funerary chapels were commissioned by wealthy bourgeois families, which gives the place an unusually monumental feel for a city cemetery.
The cemetery is open most days from morning until late afternoon and is easy to reach on foot from central Porto through the Cedofeita neighborhood. The paths are mostly flat and straightforward to walk, but comfortable shoes are a good idea.
Among those buried here are writers Camilo Castelo Branco and Soares de Passos, alongside architect Marques da Silva, who shaped much of Porto's built landscape. The presence of so many figures from literature, art and industry in one place makes it an unusually rich site for anyone curious about the city's past.
