República square, Square in Cedofeita, Porto, Portugal
República square, also known as Praça da República, is a public square in the Cedofeita neighborhood of Porto, Portugal. It has a central garden called Jardim Teófilo Braga, lined with trees, benches, and several sculptures placed along the paths.
The square was once called Campo de Santo Ovídio and served as a military training ground before being renamed Campo da Regeneração after a revolt in 1851. When Portugal declared a republic in 1910, it took the name it still carries today.
The square sits at the edge of several neighborhoods and works well as a starting point for walks into the surrounding streets. The granite paving has been recently renewed, making it easy and comfortable to walk through.
One of the sculptures in the garden, the Rapto de Ganimedes, was brought back to the square after spending years displayed in a different garden. The statues of General Pires Veloso and Padre Américo were carefully moved and repositioned during the recent renovation work.
