The church displays an octagonal shape built from granite stone, featuring two bell towers with decorative cornices and masonry spheres at their summits.
Following the demolition of the Santo Alifon chapel, construction started in 1709 and continued for three decades until its inauguration on July 18, 1739.
The exterior walls contain detailed azulejo tile panels installed in 1932, depicting multiple scenes from the life of Saint Ildefonso.
The church maintains regular mass services and stands adjacent to Batalha Square, with direct pedestrian access from surrounding streets.
During renovation works in 1996, workers discovered nineteen graves beneath the narthex area, revealing additional historical elements of the structure.
