Murvagh Beach, Sand beach in Donegal, Ireland

Murvagh Beach is a sand beach on the west coast of County Donegal, Ireland, where Donegal Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. Behind the shoreline, a row of sand dunes gives way to Murvagh Forest, a wooded area with walking paths.

The land around Murvagh Beach has long been part of the rural coastal edge of Donegal, shaped by fishing and farming communities over generations. The dunes and adjacent forest were later placed under nature protection to preserve the local wildlife and plant life.

Murvagh Beach is part of the Wild Atlantic Way, a coastal route that runs along the west of Ireland. Walking here, you get a clear sense of how closely life in Donegal is tied to the sea and the open land.

The beach is reached via a car park behind the dunes, with a short path leading down to the sand. Lifeguards are present during the summer months, and toilets are available at the car park.

Although the beach holds a Blue Flag award for water quality and safety, it remains far less visited than many other awarded beaches in Ireland, even in summer. On clear days, the outline of the Sliabh Liag cliffs, among the tallest sea cliffs in Europe, is visible from the shore.
