L'Armitière, Bookstore in central Rouen, France
L'Armitière is an independent bookstore in central Rouen, on rue Jeanne-d'Arc, and is one of the largest of its kind in France. It spans several floors and covers a wide range of sections, from French and foreign literature to comics, manga, children's books, art, and history, alongside stationery and gift items.
The bookstore opened in 1962, originally as an art space, and gradually grew into one of France's leading independent bookstores. After changing ownership in 1972 and expanding its range, it moved to its current, larger premises on rue Jeanne-d'Arc in 2015.
L'Armitière regularly hosts author signings and readings in the back of the store, giving visitors a chance to meet writers in a relaxed setting. The shelves also feature books by local authors and titles connected to Rouen and its history.
The store is easy to reach on foot from the main square of Rouen and sits along one of the city's central pedestrian streets. The surrounding area has cafes and shops nearby, making it a natural stop during a walk through the city center.
The name L'Armitière combines the French words for art and friendship, reflecting the spirit in which the store first opened as a gathering space for art lovers. The building was renovated in 2022 with energy-saving features, and a coffee shop is planned to open nearby in the near future.
