Mural of Luis Gutiérrez on Vía Zamboni, Street painting in Bologna, Italy
The Murale Luis Gutiérrez di Vía Zamboni is a street painting on the portico walls of Via Zamboni in Bologna, created by Colombian artist Luis Gutiérrez. It spans several arches and columns and shows scenes mixing South American figures, mythological imagery, and historical references painted in bold, clear lines.
Luis Gutiérrez painted this work in 1988 to mark 500 years since Europeans first arrived in America. In 2014, students from the Bologna Academy of Fine Arts, led by teacher Lucia Vanghi, restored the painting and brought its colors back to their original state.
The mural sits under the portico of Via Zamboni, between the Faculty of Letters and Piazza Scaravilli, in the heart of the university district. Students walk past it every day, and the covered space beneath it naturally becomes a meeting point and a passageway.
The painting is freely visible from the street under the public portico and requires no entry fee or reservation. Visiting during daylight makes it easier to see the colors and details clearly.
Among the figures painted on the wall, Fidel Castro and Caravaggio appear side by side, showing how the artist weaves together people from very different worlds and times. A power cable also runs across part of the artwork, something noticed during the last restoration and considered for removal to improve its appearance.
