The Riserva Naturale della Tenuta dei Massimi is a nature reserve in the southwestern outskirts of Rome, covering woodland, open pasture, and small waterways. It sits between residential neighborhoods on the edge of the city, forming a broad green corridor within the urban fringe.
The land belonged to the noble Massimo family for centuries and was used mainly for farming. It was placed under protection in the late 20th century to keep the natural landscape from being absorbed by the expanding city.
The paths through the Tenuta dei Massimi cross open fields and shrubland that were once farmed, giving the reserve a rural feel close to the city. Locals from nearby neighborhoods use it as an everyday green space for walking and running.
The trails inside the reserve are unpaved and can become muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. There are no facilities such as kiosks or restrooms on site, so bring water if you plan to walk for a while.
