"White Rhinoceros" by Michel Audiard, Sculpture in Tours, France
"Rhinocéros Blanc" by Michel Audiard is a polyester resin sculpture placed at the entrance of the Hôtel Goüin in Tours, stretching over 13 feet (4 meters) in length. Its smooth white surface catches the light and makes the piece visible from a considerable distance.
The sculpture was created by Michel Audiard, a self-taught artist from the Touraine region, and has been part of Tours for around ten years. It originally stood at the start of Rue de Bordeaux, near the train station, before being moved to its current location at the Hôtel Goüin.
The artist Michel Audiard lives and works in Rochecorbon, a small town just outside Tours, and creates large animal sculptures out of polyester resin. The white rhinoceros is part of a series of animal figures that also includes an orca placed in Marseille.
The sculpture stands clearly visible at the entrance of the Hôtel Goüin and can be seen at any time from the outside at no cost. Walking around it from all sides gives a good sense of its scale and white form.
The rhinoceros was once struck by a truck and had to be taken back to the artist's workshop for repairs. While it was gone, its base remained in place and was turned into a bench for people passing by.
