Armenian genocide monument, Monument in Bordeaux, France
The Monument du génocide arménien is a khachkar, a traditional Armenian carved cross-stone, installed in the Jardin public in the heart of Bordeaux. It stands on a pedestal and carries an inscription recalling the victims of the 1915 genocide and the martyrs of Nagorno-Karabakh.
The khachkar was unveiled in June 2023, making it one of the most recently placed memorials of this kind in France. The inauguration brought together Armenian communities from across the region, close to the anniversary of the start of the genocide.
Every year on April 24, members of the Armenian community in Bordeaux gather around the khachkar in the Jardin public to lay flowers and listen to the duduk, a traditional Armenian wind instrument. These ceremonies draw families who have lived in the region for generations and visitors who come specifically for the occasion.
The khachkar is located inside the Jardin public, a large city park a short walk from the center of Bordeaux, easy to reach on foot or by tram. The park is open every day, and the monument is visible from the main paths.
The inscription on the pedestal honors not only the victims of the 1915 genocide but also Armenians who died fighting for France in the wars of the 20th century. This dual reference ties Armenian memory directly to French history.
