Pierre Cheval viewpoint, Scenic viewpoint in Épernay, France
The Belvédère Pierre Cheval is a scenic viewpoint on Mont Bernon, a hill on the edge of Épernay in the Champagne region of France. A wooden platform reached by around 60 steps offers a wide view over the town, the Marne River, and the vineyards stretching toward the Montagne de Reims.
Mont Bernon was listed as a natural monument in 1934, marking its protection as part of the landscape around Épernay. The hill's slopes have long been tied to the winemaking tradition that shaped this part of the Champagne region over centuries.
From the platform, the rows of vines spreading across the Côte des Blancs and the plains below tell the story of a region shaped for generations by winemaking. Information boards on site explain the local plants, animals, and rocks, helping visitors make sense of what they see.
The climb to the platform is short and manageable for most visitors, though the wooden steps can be slippery in wet weather. The path leading there is the Chemin de la Source, and the site has picnic tables and benches for those who want to linger.
The viewpoint is part of a trail linking four high points around Épernay, so a single walk can connect several different outlooks over the region. From here, the village of Hautvillers is visible in the distance, where Dom Pérignon carried out his wine experiments in the 17th century.
