La Garita d'Herbeira is a small historic stone watchtower cabin perched at the top of the Serra da Capelada, above the Herbeira cliffs near Cedeira in Galicia. The square granite structure has several windows, a chimney, and is enclosed by a low stone wall.
The watchtower cabin was built in 1805 to keep watch over the coast and the sea approaching from the Atlantic. The people of Cedeira restored the building in 2003, keeping it standing for future generations.
The Garita d'Herbeira sits at the top of the Serra da Capelada and acts as a gathering point for people exploring the coastal area. On clear days, visitors can spot distant capes and even the Sisargas Islands far out to sea.
The site is accessible by road from Cedeira, along a route that also connects to Cariño and the sanctuary of San Andrés de Teixido. Wind at the top can be very strong, so it is worth bringing a windproof layer whatever the season.
The Herbeira cliffs directly below the cabin are considered the highest open-sea cliffs on the European continent, with a slope close to 80 percent. A local weather effect called 'vento' or 'paredón do nordés' forms here when Atlantic winds hit the ridge, meaning it can rain in Cariño while Cedeira stays sunny and noticeably warmer on the same day.
