Henri Krasucki staircase, Stairs in Belleville, Paris, France
The Escalier Henri Krasucki is a stairway in the Belleville neighborhood of Paris, in the 20th arrondissement. It links several streets at different levels, including Rue des Cascades and Rue de la Mare.
Belleville was originally a working-class area of workshops and modest homes, and this stairway served residents moving through its hilly streets. It was later named after Henri Krasucki, a World War 2 resistance fighter and union leader who lived nearby.
The stairway is freely accessible at any time and fits naturally into a walk through Belleville. Since the terrain is hilly, comfortable shoes are a good idea.
Just below the stairway, old underground water channels from Belleville's historic water supply system run beneath the street and are now listed as a protected site. Nearby, the facade of a bakery built in 1910 is also protected and still looks much as it did over a century ago.
