Vaugirard Cemetery, Cemetery in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, France

The Cimetière de Vaugirard is a cemetery in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, lying west of Rue Lecourbe, with around 2,500 graves spread across roughly 1.5 hectares (about 3.7 acres). The paths run between rows of gravestones of varying ages, shaded by trees from 17 different species, and a dedicated military section occupies one part of the grounds.

The cemetery opened in 1787, replacing two older burial grounds that had belonged to the parish of Saint-Sulpice and were forced to close. It grew in size between the late 18th and mid-19th centuries, making it one of the oldest still-active burial sites in the city.

The Cimetière de Vaugirard, in the 15th arrondissement, has long been a place where Parisian families return to remember their relatives across generations. On religious holidays and remembrance days, it is common to see fresh flowers and small offerings left along the paths.

The cemetery is easy to reach from the Lourmel metro station on line 8, and the entrance sits directly on Rue Lecourbe, making it straightforward to find on foot from the neighborhood. Going in the morning tends to be quieter, as more visitors arrive during the afternoon.

The military section, set aside in 1882 for residents of the Hôtel des Invalides, holds graves from both World Wars and stands out for the sobriety of its markers compared to the rest of the grounds. It is one of the few examples of a burial space directly connected to the Invalides within the city itself.
