Café Bastille, Bar and café in Paris, France
Café Bastille is a bar and café located on Place de la Bastille, in eastern Paris. It has a street-facing terrace that looks directly onto the square and its central monument.
The Place de la Bastille, where this café stands, was created after the fortress of the same name was torn down in 1789. The area around it grew into a busy meeting point in eastern Paris over the following centuries.
Café Bastille sits right on Place de la Bastille, a square that carries strong meaning for many Parisians. Sitting on the terrace, you can watch people pass by the July Column and the opera house nearby.
The café is easy to reach since Bastille metro station is right next to it. The terrace fills up quickly on warm days, so arriving early gives you a better chance of finding a spot outside.
The July Column visible from the café terrace does not commemorate the events of 1789 but instead honors those who died in the 1830 revolution. Many visitors assume it marks the fall of the Bastille, but the two are separate stories.
