Grands Boulevards, Metro station in the 9th arrondissement, Paris
Grands Boulevards is a metro station in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, served by lines 8 and 9. The two lines have separate platforms stacked one above the other, each with a different ceiling shape and color scheme.
The station opened in 1931 under the name Rue Montmartre, reflecting its proximity to that busy commercial street. It was renamed Grands Boulevards in 1998 to better reflect its actual position along the wide Parisian avenues.
The station has 6 entrances spread across the surrounding streets, including Faubourg-Montmartre and Boulevard Montmartre, making it easy to reach from different directions. Avoiding rush hours makes the experience more comfortable, as the platforms can get very crowded during peak times.
The line 8 platform has an elliptical, rounded ceiling, while the line 9 platform directly above it has a flat one. This unusual pairing of two different tunnel shapes at the same station was a result of ground conditions during construction.
