The Musée Transitoire is an art museum in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, housed in two former administrative buildings on boulevard de la Bastille. The exhibitions spread across both buildings, mixing installations, video works, and sound pieces that change regularly.
The Musée Transitoire was founded by artist Romina Shama and has previously occupied other temporarily unused spaces, including a disused car park in Paris and greenhouses in Geneva. The current Bastille location is the third edition of the museum, set in offices that once belonged to the social welfare administration for independent workers.
The Musée Transitoire takes its name seriously: it positions itself as a place that is neither finished nor fixed. Visitors move through rooms that still carry traces of their former use, with old furniture, papers, and hallways left largely as they were.
The museum opens on Fridays through Sundays in the afternoon and is located in a building that gives little away from the outside. It is worth checking the current exhibition in advance, as the program changes often.
One of the works in the museum comes from Lee Lozano, an artist who decided in 1972 to permanently withdraw from the art world. This act of stepping away is itself considered part of her work.
