The Tôlerie, Arts centre in Clermont-Ferrand, France
La Tôlerie is an arts centre in Clermont-Ferrand, housed in a former garage and devoted to contemporary art. The interior spans roughly 500 square meters (5,400 sq ft) with high ceilings and large windows that let in plenty of natural light.
The building was originally a factory and garage before the city of Clermont-Ferrand converted it into an arts centre in 2003. The renovation kept much of the original structure intact, so the industrial elements are still clearly visible today.
La Tôlerie invites visitors to experience contemporary art in a space that still carries traces of its industrial past. The brick walls and metal beams create a direct contrast with the modern works on display, giving the visit a particular character.
The centre is located near other cultural spots in Clermont-Ferrand, making it easy to combine a visit with a walk through the surrounding area. It is open on most days, so dropping in without advance planning is usually possible.
Each season is shaped by a guest curator invited from outside, which means the programme can change quite significantly from one year to the next. This way of working makes it hard to predict what you will find on your next visit.
