Water mirror and waterfall, Fountain in the center of Clermont-Ferrand, France
The Miroir d'eau et cascade is a fountain in the center of Clermont-Ferrand, made up of a very thin sheet of water spread across a flat surface at ground level, alongside a small cascade. The two elements sit side by side, creating a water feature that changes appearance depending on the light and wind conditions throughout the day.
The Miroir d'eau is one of the newer fountains in Clermont-Ferrand, built to give the city center a contemporary public space while keeping the layout open and flat. After it was completed, the surrounding area was gradually improved with seating and greenery to draw more people to the spot.
The name "Miroir d'eau" translates from French as "water mirror", pointing directly to the effect the flat surface creates on a windless day. Children often walk across the shallow water barefoot, treating the fountain less like a monument and more like a place to play.
The fountain sits in the city center and is easy to reach on foot from most nearby public spaces and streets. A visit in the evening offers a different experience from daytime, as lighting gives the water surface a warmer and more enclosed feel.
The water layer is kept so thin that people can walk directly across the surface when the level is at its lowest, making this a fountain you step into rather than observe from the side. This design choice sets it apart from most other city fountains, where contact with the water is discouraged.
