Revitalized zinc heap, Park in Ruda Śląska, Poland
Tas de zinc revitalisé is a park in Ruda Śląska, Poland, built on a former spoil heap left by zinc mining. The site is now covered with grass and trees, with winding paths that follow the shape of the old hill, including a toboggan run on one of its slopes.
The site was for decades an unused heap of waste from the zinc industry that shaped Ruda Śląska through the 19th and 20th centuries. The transformation project began after a community meeting at a local primary school and was completed in 2019.
Sturdy shoes and water are worth bringing if you plan to walk the paths around the slopes. The park is open year-round and can be explored on foot or by bike.
The park's name comes from French and means simply "zinc heap", keeping the memory of the site's industrial past in plain sight. Experts from the Silesian University of Technology checked the ground for safety and contamination before the space opened to the public.
