A breath of freedom, Sculpture in Brzeźno, Gdańsk, Poland
Une bouffée de liberté is a concrete sculpture in Ronald Reagan Park, in the Brzeźno district of Gdańsk, Poland. Created by Jerzy Dobrzański, it shows a joyful boy standing upright, holding a pinwheel in his raised hand and looking upward.
The sculpture was made in 2012 as part of the Crossroads of Freedom festival, which took place in Gdańsk between 2009 and 2019. The festival brought together artists from around the world around the theme of freedom.
The sculpture stands outdoors in Ronald Reagan Park and can be visited at any time without an entrance fee. The park is close to the Baltic Sea shore and easy to explore on foot.
Dobrzański deliberately chose a child as the subject rather than a heroic figure, as a way of responding to the heavy monuments from Poland's communist era. The title is written in French, even though the work stands in Poland, giving it an intentionally open, cross-border feeling.
