Centro de visitantes de Medina-Azahara, Museum and visitor center near Córdoba, Spain

The Centro de visitantes de Medina-Azahara is a modern museum and reception center near the ancient palatine city of Medina Azahara, on the outskirts of Córdoba. Designed by architects Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, the building has three floors, two of which are underground, allowing it to sit low in the surrounding landscape.

The center opened in 2009, built by the Junta de Andalucía to give visitors a proper introduction before entering the archaeological site. It was created as Medina Azahara gained growing recognition, a process that culminated in the site's UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2018.

The visitor center sits at the edge of the archaeological site and serves as the natural starting point for any visit to the ruins. Inside, audiovisual presentations show how the city looked in the 10th century, alongside original objects from Andalusian Islamic history.

It is worth starting the visit at the center before heading to the ruins, as the exhibits help make sense of what you will see on site. A shuttle bus runs from the center to the archaeological area, and there is also a parking area for those arriving by car.

The building won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2010, one of the most respected prizes for buildings connected to the Islamic world. It was also named European Museum of the Year in 2012, which is unusual for a reception center of this size.
