Grotte Benkovskata Peshtera is a natural cave near the village of Yamna, in the Teteven area of Bulgaria. It sits in a karst landscape within dense forest, and its interior features narrow passages and small chambers with rough, water-shaped walls.
In 1876, during the April Uprising against Ottoman rule, the revolutionary Georgi Benkovski and his men hid inside this cave for several days. The site was later declared a protected natural landmark and place of historical importance.
The cave takes its name from Georgi Benkovski, a Bulgarian revolutionary, which gives the site a meaning that goes beyond its natural form. A marked trail called 'On Benkovski's Footsteps' leads to the entrance, and local guides still tell stories about the men who once hid here.
The cave is reached on foot via a marked trail from the village of Yamna, so sturdy shoes are a good idea as the path can be uneven and rocky in places. Anyone planning to go inside should bring a flashlight and a jacket, since the temperature stays cool even when it is warm outside.
