Boatin Biosphere Reserve, Nature reserve in Balkan Mountains, Bulgaria.

Boatin Biosphere Reserve covers 1,597.2 hectares on the northern slopes below Tetevenska Baba, in the valley of the Divchovska River, from 800 to 2,000 m above sea level. Almost the whole area is forest: pure beech stands on the lower ground, with trees averaging 130 years and some over 200 years old and up to 50 m tall, and spruce with small groups of silver fir higher up.

The area received protected status in 1948 as Bulgaria sought to safeguard the natural habitats of the Balkan region. This designation reflected growing recognition of the need to preserve these mountain ecosystems for future generations.

The reserve lies in the land of Divchovoto village, in the valley of the Divchovska River, which rises on Baba Peak and gives rise to the Cherni Vit. The name Boatin also appears in the form Boitine. The area is a core zone of the Central Balkan National Park, and UNESCO reviews its biosphere status.

Boatin lies in the westernmost part of Central Balkan National Park, in the Divchovska river valley on the land of Divchovoto village, between 800 and 2000 m altitude. Access is via the valley of the Divchovska, which rises at Baba peak and feeds the Cherni Vit. The terrain climbs steeply from the valley floor to the ridge, so plan the route by elevation gain rather than distance.

Boatin's pure beech forests are considered the best preserved on the Balkan Peninsula, with trees averaging 130 years old and some over 200 years old reaching 50 m in height. Nearly all of the reserve's 1,597.2 hectares is forested, and almost every woodpecker species found in Bulgaria can be observed here, most of them listed in the country's Red Book.
