First Shot bridge

The First Shot Bridge is a stone crossing built in the early 19th century that spans the Topolnitsa River and connects two parts of Koprivshtitsa. Its arched structure shows characteristic Bulgarian design of that era and remains open to foot traffic.

Built in 1813, the bridge became historically significant when the April Uprising against Ottoman rule started at this location in 1876. This event transformed it into a symbol of Bulgaria's fight for independence.

The bridge holds meaning for locals as a gathering place and symbol of resistance during Bulgaria's struggle for independence. Its name reflects the pivotal moment when the first shots of the uprising echoed across these waters.

The best approach is through Koprivshtitsa's old town, which has cobblestone streets and gentle slopes. Wear comfortable shoes as the area is hilly and pedestrian paths can be uneven.

Each May, reenactors gather at the bridge to perform scenes from the 1876 uprising, with both locals and visitors participating in the remembrance. These annual commemorations bring the historical events to life in a way that connects past and present.
