Koprivshtitsa, Municipal town in Sofia Province, Bulgaria

Koprivshtitsa is a mountain town with around 383 traditional houses featuring red-tiled roofs, wooden gates, and stone walls set along narrow cobblestone streets at about 1060 meters elevation. The buildings display consistent local architecture that shapes the overall appearance of the settlement.

The settlement was the starting point of the April Uprising of 1876, a turning point in resistance against Ottoman rule. This event became central to Bulgaria's struggle for independence.

The settlement maintains strong connections to traditional Bulgarian culture, with local craftspeople continuing to work with textiles and wood in ways visible throughout the town. Visitors can observe these practices in homes and workshops as part of everyday life.

You can purchase combined tickets to visit six museum houses showcasing residences of important figures from local history. The narrow streets require comfortable walking shoes, and the mountain elevation means weather can be changeable.

The local 19th-century schoolhouse employed an unusual teaching method where students practiced writing in sandboxes instead of paper. This historical technique is preserved and displayed in the building for visitors to see.
